ENVIRONMENTAL LITERACY THROUGH SUPPORT FOR THE REACTIVATION OF REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE (TPS3R) WASTE TREATMENT SITES IN AMBULU VILLAGE

Abstract

Background. Waste management remains an environmental issue that requires sustainable solutions and active community involvement. The TPS3R in Ambulu Village previously operated but became inactive, creating a need for reactivation, along with increased community awareness and participation.

Aims. This community service activity aimed to support TPS3R reactivation through an environmental literacy approach and door-to-door socialization.

Methods. The activity employed a descriptive participatory approach involving the village government, TPS3R management, RT/RW representatives, and the community. The implementation stages included identifying initial conditions, coordinating with stakeholders, conducting community socialization, collecting user data, improving facilities and operational systems, and re-inaugurating the TPS3R.

Result. The results showed an increase in waste collection service users from 526 before socialization to 838 afterward, an additional 312 users, or an increase of 59.32% increase. The increase occurred across all five targeted hamlets. The direct socialization approach delivered information on waste collection procedures and encouraged community involvement in organized waste management.

Conclusion. Reactivating TPS3R also provided an alternative way to process collected waste before it became residual waste. Therefore, combining environmental literacy, door-to-door socialization, and collaboration with the village government can support community participation and TPS3R sustainability.

Implementation. Continued community education and stronger TPS3R management are recommended to sustain the program.
